TN to go ahead with Class 5, 8 board exams from this academic year

The State government has decided to go ahead and conduct board exams for Classes 5 and 8 from this academic year with the Directorate of Elementary Education coming out with new guidelines for the exams in line with the Centre’s New Education Policy (NEP)

.A senior School Education Department official told DT Next that about 20 lakh students studying in Classes 5 and 8 from government and self-financing schools will appear for the exam, which will be conducted between March and April.  The move assumes significant as School Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan had recently asserted that the State was given three years grace period by the Ministry for Human Resources and Development (MHRD) for conducting these board exams.

“Soon, an examination committee, led by the District Chief Education Officer comprising members including those from Teacher’s Training Board, headmasters and academicians, will be constituted,” he added. Stating that examination centres will be identified, he said authorities will ensure that for Class 5 students, these centres are within one km from their residence and for Class 8 students, within three km from their residence.

The time-table will be announced by December and examination pattern will be a formative assessment model where 40 marks will be allocated from basic concepts, practices and learning outcomes of the students. “Question papers will be prepared by members of the examination committee like it is done for board exams for SSLC, Class 11 and 12,” he said.

Pointing out that answer sheets would be evaluated by teachers concerned, the official said that marks will be uploaded in the Education Management Information System (EMIS), a common platform for teachers, parents and school management.
